Arthritis & Joint Pain

Most forms of arthritis are thought to be caused by a fault in the immune system that causes the body to attack its own tissues in the joints. This may be inherited genetically.

Symptoms may include pain, stiffness, swelling, warmth, or redness in 1 or more joints. There is no cure for arthritis. The treatment goal is to limit pain and inflammation and preserve joint function. 

It most commonly starts among people between the ages of 40 and 60. It's more common in women than men. There are drugs that can slow down an over-active immune system and therefore reduce the pain and swelling in joints.

In general, the first sign of arthritis is pain, also called arthralgia. This can feel like a dull ache or a burning sensation. 

Use of heat, such as applying heating pads to aching joints, taking hot baths or showers, or immersing painful joints in warm paraffin wax, can help relieve pain temporarily.

Vitamin D is important for keeping bones strong and preventing injuries from falls. Research shows that people with low levels of vitamin D may have more joint pain.

Make an appointment with your doctor if your joint pain is accompanied by: Swelling. Redness. Tenderness and warmth around the joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis, or RA, is an autoimmune and inflammatory disease, which means that your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake, causing inflammation (painful swelling) in the affected parts of the body.

If you think your joint inflammation is due to a sudden injury, the RICE (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) method is the first line of treatment to reduce pain and swelling.

Unfortunately, sugar is on top of the list of foods that may increase muscle and joint inflammation. Numerous studies suggest that processed sugars release proinflammatory substances in the body, causing further inflammation in the joints
